Institute of tribal studies and Research is devoted to serve the specific aspirations of the tribal community of the state of Kerala, intended to be innovative and responsive to the educational needs of the tribal communities and individuals. The ITSR is aimed at ensuring the learning opportunities and experiences which promote leadership, development, professional preparation, civic responsibility, and cultural stewardship among the tribal groups.

ITSR, is imparting quality teaching learning to learners from tribal communities and diverse background which gets enrolled to the institution. Consequently, the learning interest and pace of every student is different. Therefore, some are not-so-gifted learners (Slow learners) and whereas some are gifted learners (advanced learners). In such a situation, it is very important to identify the learners and plan accordingly to deliver student oriented teaching-learning.

ITSR is committed to enhance the academic performance of the enrolled students, thereby, it makes due efforts to augment the academic performance of slow learners. In this regard, the ITSR considers remedial coaching as a vital tool to upgrade the academic performance of slow learners. The slow learners identified on the basis of their performance in previous examinations, responsiveness in classroom teaching learning and after continuous monitoring in the class are encourage attending additional supportive classes to develop their interests in the subject. In addition, additional programs like group discussion guest lecturers interaction with subject experts, etc are conducted to provide additional support to them.

Apart from this, the slow learners are given additional study material and encourage solving previous examination papers of university. The faculty members remain in regular contact with slow learners within and outside the campus. This helps to encourage slow learners to share their queries and doubts with the teachers.

The faculty members encourage the advance learners to take participation in different activities like elocution, debate, quiz competition, etc. to provide righteous platform to develop the skills and abilities of advance learners. The faculty members remain in contact with the advance learners sincerely, which helps the advance learners to discuss and share their views on advance topics of the subject.

Mechanism of the Scheme

At the entry level, the students were assessed on the the basis of their performance in Learner‟s Aptitude Test, preceding examination, interest in chosen current subject, involvement in classroom teaching-learning, and learning pace of students. After the identification of the learners, the department prepares a schedule accordingly and allots the topics to the faculty members. The students and the teachers are notified about the schedule and details of remedial classes through notices. Then, the remedial classes are conducted regularly for the identified slow learners, as per the schedule. During these classes, additional study materials are also arranged by the faculty for the students to bridge the knowledge gap & enable them to cope with the academic course to which they are enrolled.

In addition, the departments organize different activity like group discussions, study tours, guest lectures along with interactions with the subject experts, etc.

                        STUDENTS MENTORING SYSTEM

Faculty mentors play a crucial role in mentoring graduates. Students and their mentors share responsibility for ensuring productive and rewarding mentoring relationships. Both parties have a role to play in the success of mentoring. For graduate and Post Graduate students, a mentor is someone who serves as a guide throughout their institutional training. They provide both professional and personal advice to the students. They further give constructive feedback on writing, teaching and other elements of career design. They can serve to help students balance professional goals with their personal lives or give emotional encouragement during challenging times.

OBJECTIVES

  • To establish a first line of communication for each student with the institution.
  • To create a sense of oneness among students with the institution.
  • To identify and mitigate psychology societal and other issues faced by students and coursed there or refer them to experts for remedy.
  • To make the students be self-aware of their strengths and weekness and take necessary remedial action.

THE PRACTICE

  • Each faculty member is the mentor of a group of 15 to 20 students allocated to him/ her by the Head of the Department. Those faculties will continue to be the mentors for the same group of students till their graduation.
  • The teacher mentor collects personal information from the ward without touching sensitive issues or forcing any information out of the wards and then provides the needed counseling to the wards.
  • Critical issues are brought to the notice of the Head of the Department.
  • The teacher meets the wards informally outside class hours as well and guides them regarding their career options.
  • A documented record of the mentoring process is maintained by the mentor teacher and the Head of the Department for reference purposes.
  • When the students enter the college, they get lost in the crowd with too many students in the same class coming from different backgrounds these students face stress of complex course, peer pressure, and emotional immaturity.
