Institute of Tribal Studies and Research

Institute of Tribal Studies and Research (ITSR), situated at Chethalayam, Wayanad, is a unique venture of University of Calicut. ITSR has a lush green campus spread over 10 acres. The institute is devoted to serve the specific aspirations of the tribal community of the state of Kerala, intended to be innovative and responsive to the educational needs of the tribal communities and individuals. The ITSR is aimed at ensuring the learning opportunities and experiences which promote leadership, development, professional preparation, civic responsibility, and cultural stewardship among the tribal groups. The mission of the Institute of Tribal Studies and Research (ITSR) set up in Wayanad district of the state of Kerala is to attain excellence in academic quality, scholarly engagement, leadership, cultural enrichment and service of the tribal population of Kerala. The Institute also aims to act as a worthy research center exploring the rich history of the region, the legacy of the tribes in various fields of human endeavor, their indigenous knowledge systems and specific art forms and culture.

ANTI-RAGGING CELL

ITSR maintains a healthy and congenial academic environment for the student. The institution offers protection to the new entrants from the menace of ragging. In this regard this institution has constituted an Anti- ragging cell. Also an anti ragging Squad has been deputed from all department to monitor students discipline both inside and outside the campus. The college-level punishment in cases of ragging as per UGC directives includes one or more of the following:

  1. Suspensions from attending classes and academic privileges.
  2. Withholding / withdrawing scholarship / fellowship and other benefits.
  3. Debarring from appearing any test/ examination or other evaluation process. Withholding of results.
  4. Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
  5. Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for specific periods. The UGC has issued very strong and detailed regulations for curbing the menace of ragging in Higher Educational Institutions. As per regulations any of the following acts come under the purview of ragging.
  6. Any conduct by any student or student whether by words (spoken or written) or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student
  7. Indulging in rowdy or in disciplined activities by any student or students which cause or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension there of in any fresher or any other student
  8. Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the psyche of such fresher or any other student
  9. Any act by a senior student that prevents, disturb the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher;
  10. Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing the academic task assigned to an individual or a group of students.
  11. Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it; sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing for obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing boily harm or any other danger to health or person
  12. Any act or abusive spoken words, e-mails, public insults which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student
  13. Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student

GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL CELL

 

“Problems have solutions, bring the change & be the change”

As human beings we have expectations from life and when these expectations are not fulfilled it paves way to discontentment and dissatisfaction. Similarly an institution creates a certain set of expectations among students, when these expectations are not met it leads to grievances. At New Horizon we prioritize student satisfaction, thus we are introducing a “Grievance Cell” where students can voice out their concerns or dissatisfaction pertaining to ITSR activities.

Objectives

  • To render a platform for the students  to address their complaints, Issues and concerns.
  • To develop a responsive and accountable attitude among all the stakeholders in order
  • To maintain a harmonious educational atmosphere in the ITSR.

Procedure

  • The individual can visit the grievance cell at any given point of time to voice their concerns.
  • A grievance cell member will maintain a book of records to ensure transparency.
  • The concern/issue will be addressed and communicated to the higher authority.
  • A feedback for the same will be communicated to the individual who has raised the grievance
  • A suggestion box will be placed in the campus to address concerns.

ANTI - DRUG CELL

The Anti Drug Cell of the ITSR has been established for curbing drug trafficking and use of illegal substances inside the campus. An effective vigilant committee has been constituted inorder to execute the functions of the cell and also to impart an awareness campaign against use of drugs in the campus.

Objective

To ensure a drug- free campus by imposing a total ban on the possession or consumption or use of drugs and alcohol by students of the college, within or outside the campus/hostels.

Activities

The duties of the anti-narcotics cell include organizing awareness programmes in the college and hostels with the help of government authorized agencies/ organizations. Educating the students about the ill-effects of drugs and alcohol, encouraging peer policing among students against the use of drugs and reporting of any noticed use of drugs by the students to the students affairs committee are also the duties of the anti-drugs cell.
